The 52-year-old actor and musician received the Comedic Genius Award at this year’s show, presented live from Barker Hangar in Los Angeles on Sunday.
AfterAwkwafinaintroduced a montage of clips from some of Black’s most famous roles, the funny man began his acceptance speech, “Comedic Genius? Come on, are you kidding? For what?!”
“This is for all theSchool of Rockers out there, and for all the Tenacious D-isciples,” he added. “And most of all, my amazing wife, Tanya, and our two incredible boys — I love you, I love you, I love you.”

Black — who is one half of comedy rock duo Tenacious D, founded along with bandmateKyle Gassin the mid ’90s — has made a career in comedy films over the past 25-plus years, having appeared in films likeBio-Dome,The Cable GuyandMars Attacks!before his lead role oppositeGwyneth Paltrowin 2001’sShallow Hal.
He went on to star in several other funny films likeSchool of Rock,Nacho Libre,The Holiday,Tropic Thunderand even 2006’s semi-autobiographical fantasyTenacious D in The Pick of Destinyalongside Gass, 61. Black has also lent his voice to several animated films like Shark Tale,Kung Fu Pandaand its sequels, to name a few.
In recent years, Black has tickled funny bones in theJumanjifilms andThe House with a Clock in Its Walls, plus 2015’sGoosebumpsand its 2018 sequel.
He also voices characters in the recently releasedApollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood, and will voice villain Bowser in theuntitledMarioanimated filmco-starringChris Pratt,Anya Taylor-Joy,Charlie Day,Keegan-Michael Key,Seth RogenandFred Armisen.
