We all know that Saturn is the major planet with the rings , but how many did you believe there were ? In this photo , by the Cassini ballistic capsule on January 8 , 2015 , you may spend a good dyad of hours trying to count them .

From NASA , an account of where structure inside the rings total from :

Structures in the rings can be due to many things , but often time Saturn ’s many moonshine are the culprits . The glowering gaps near the left over edge of the A ring ( the broad , outmost ring here ) are because of the Moon ( Pan and Daphnis ) embedded in the gaps , while the spacious Cassini division ( obscure area between the bacillus hoop and A ring here ) is created by a resonance with the medium - sized Sun Myung Moon Mimas ( which revolve well outside the rings ) . Prometheus is seen orbiting just outside the A ring in the low left-hand quadrant of this image ; the F ring can be faintly control to the left wing of Prometheus .
And yet , we ’re stillnot entirely sure where the rings themselves come from .
