Slade House David Mitchell is a literary darling , who ’s gain acclaim and award nomination . But when he peach about the thing that shaped him as an author , he namechecks genre stalwarts like Ursula K. Le Guin , Philip Jose Farmer … and Dungeons & Dragons .

Mitchell gavea long , long consultation to the Geeks Guide to the Galaxy podcasta while back , andnow there ’s a full - distance copy online . The whole thing makes for fascinating reading , include Mitchell ’s Brobdingnagian debt to Le Guin , and his family relationship with Kazuo Ishiguro , and how he go about creating an expansive shared world for all his novels . But my favored bit is probably where he talk about what he learned from playing D&D :

I played Dungeons and Dragons as a kid ; a lot of us did really . A lot of the writer I have it away would be at bar late at night after literary festivals . Sometimes the conversation will get around to us huddled over in the corner saying , “ So , did you represent donjon and Dragons ? ” And it ’s awesome how many say yes . Gary Gygax has a muckle to answer for . I know there are in all likelihood PhD theses out there somewhere on Gary Gygax ’s influence on the twenty-first century novel . It would not be negligible … .

Ingenuity and the way that some of the dungeons , the scenarios , could outwit you and fob you , and the toothsomeness of being outwit and tricked . So routine one , I ’ve got no idea what the epithet are , but an dangerous undertaking began on a mountaintop , and there was a pool , just a clear pool , and nothing else , nothing else in the world , and you had to function out how to get into the risky venture , and I tried to throw a stone into the puddle . And the dungeon master , Charles , said , “ You see a splash . ” That was it . And we wasted more time looking around for the fashion in again , and then Charles enounce , “ Just try cast off another endocarp in . ” So , we did , and he said , “ You see a spatter . ” And , okay , yeah and ? Nothing . Then the third time , Charles said , “ You see a splash . ” Then my friend , Richard , who I ’m still friends with , and who is and was smarter than me , pronounce , “ You see a splash . You do n’t get word a spattering . You just see a dab . ” And that was the key . So it was an illusive pool of illusory piss because you just see it , you did n’t try it . Is n’t that cool ? And it ’s these constellations of , “ Is n’t that cool ? Is n’t that nerveless ? Is n’t that cool ? ” in the generation of the globe that I still remember and think very lovingly on .

More generally , outside the world , and on our level of reality , it was a collaborative artistry form . It ’s something you all made . It was noncompetitive . It was based on cooperation , and you only get ahead if you work together , and there was a unselfishness of disembodied spirit in not picking the part , or finding flaw with , or wasting clock time on hunting for the incompatibility within the whole enterprise , and that is something that I do n’t feel you get on computer generated multiplayer game . Computer render is really a foresighted word for it , but digital version of the same . But we were speaking with each other . We were laughing , and interacting , and making thing , and being friend . And the games , although we take it seriously , in a means , it was only the vehicle for the human fundamental interaction that made the whole thing so very enjoyable .

The whole copy is well deserving reading , over at Nightmare Magazine .
