It ’s fair to say that Helldivers 2 is having a ripe hebdomad . Beating GTA V ’s concurrent Steam histrion records , the origin shooter is outdoing everyone ’s expectations , including its own , and it seems this winner is spilling over . Because if there ’s one source that Helldivers owes the most to , it ’s Starship Troopers , and it seems the 1997 motion picture is having its own renaissance . Here ’s why you should watch it too .
As highlighted by developer Arrowhead Studios ’ CEO , Johan Pilestedt ( thanks IGN ) , Starship Troopers ’ popularity has risen to being the forty-fifth most popular movie online , according tothe ranking of Television Stats . While the graphical record on the site usher this number climbing from # 109 on February 15 to the newfangled turn the next solar day , it ’s incredibly unlikely the 27 - yr - sometime film was outrank even that high before Helldivers 2 ’s initial going the week before .

Helldivers 2 , like its original top - down harbinger , begins on Super Earth , where republic has been upgraded to a managed form , allowing elections to be more predictable . See , before , the great unwashed could just vote for whomever they care , but on Super Earth commonwealth is spread far and wide through bombs and war . You ’re fighting Terminids , an alien backwash of insectoid creature who are just evil , OK , spreading their tyranny across the galaxy , and indeed the evil socialist Cyborgs , and mysterious Illuminates . The Helldivers , as this snatch - up video unimprovably states , are “ the coltsfoot ’s last strain of law-breaking . ”

Which , if you ’ve seen Starship Troopers , will fathom fairly familiar . While there are no robot or cloak Squ’ith , it sure had germ , and very much the same attitude toward spread humanity ’s singular advance to freedom across the wandflower . That ’s , of course , because Helldivers took heavy influence from Paul Verhoeven ’s sci - fi epic . Except , when it was released , not many others seemed to understand what it was all about .
The Book Of The Film
The confusion was at least well - founded . Starship Troopers is ( very generally ) based on the novel of the same name , written by Robert A. Heinlein , and that book ’s political relation are … equivocal . Heinlein himself veer from bountiful to libertarian over the course of his life , both a pioneer for racial equation , and a bounteous fan of Ayn Rand . The 1959 book seems to reflect some of his more conservative leanings , glorifying the military , and seeming to plump for its conceit that suffrage was only achieve through military service . At the clip of its exit , many critic described it as “ fascist , ” although it ’s in all likelihood reasonable to say its precise political propensity were deliberately obfuscate .
Verhoeven for sure had no time for it . accord to Empire , the theater director was cite as say “ I stopped after two chapter because it was so boring . ” He adds , “ It ’s a very ripe - offstage book , ” and that he asked the movie ’s writer , Ed Neumeier ( RoboCop ) , to summarise the story for him to save reading through it . But this , it seems , was enough to set off the director ’s interest .
Previously , Neumeier had been stress to get a handwriting developed with the awe-inspiring title , Bug Hunt at Outpost 7 . RoboCop manufacturer Jon Davison observed how standardized his idea was to Heinlein ’s book , and they eventually discovered the cinema rights were available . It took years to develop , but the RoboCop writer , manufacturer and film director squad eventually reunite with all the pieces in place in 1996 , and a plan to make a film that would explore the innate fascism in the source stuff .

An Immodest Proposal
The final result is extraordinary . Satire is almost always most successful when deeply elusive . People were furious about A Modest Proposal because its deadpan delivery meant they really believed Swift wanted the Irish to eat their baby . Starship Troopers did something very different : it was atrociously cheap , unintelligent and bombastic in its livery of its satirical commentary on the military , and the United States ’ approaching to spreading democracy .
It was a story about a monstrous future where citizenship and suffrage was only earned through federal service , where humans launched brutal attack on the planets of insectoid puppet derisively called Bugs . It was irony written on a sledgehammer , repeatedly swing out into the screen . And it was striking . uproarious , biting , and wonderfully hammy , it took the eccentricity of RoboCop and cranked it up to 11 . And yet even then , no one got it .
The minus response from Heinlein fans was perceivable . For those who delight it as a fascistic workplace , it was a pic that like a shot contradicted this message . Boo hoo . For those who controvert this version , it was a film that so broadly diverge from its source material as to be an insult . But the wider critical reply remains dead bemusing . No matter how obvious it was , how overtly over - signalled was every aspect of its lampooning , reader still thought it was a pro - fascistic screed . It ’s deeply embarrassing .

Paul Verhoeven toldAV Clubin 2007 how The Washington Post spell an editorial calling it “ fascist , and the writing and directing were neo - Nazi . ” The same paper’sStephen Hunter wrotethat it was “ Nazi to the inwardness , ” adding , “ It ’s spiritually Nazi , psychologically Nazi . It come directly out of the Nazi resourcefulness , and is set in the Nazi world . ” The cruel satire of this — in fact , the abject flagitious stupidity of it — was that Verhoeven , born 1938 , grew up in Nazi - occupied Holland . He experience first - hand the repulsion of the Nazis , and take to make Starship Troopers in part because he want to criticise such fascistic political orientation free-base on personal experience .

It ’s a film that really holds up . Scheol , it ’s a film that has never fall out of relevance since its spillage , and give how 2024 ’s look , is one that might become far too relevant soon enough . Its portrayal of both the military complex and the media response is perfect , and the incredible grooming clique shot will still shock anyone look at for the first metre .
The special essence remain grand , too . The Bugs are detailed CGI , alongside practical effects , and do n’t sense particularly dated . Also , remember Denise Richards ? She ’s great in this !
I extremely recommend get hold of the movie . It ’s on Disney+ , which is quite the thing , as well as availableto buyon Prime , etc . It ’s an absolute classic — a mighty , over - the - top action motion-picture show coalesce with an anti - fascist satire , and you may herald yourself smarter than a WaPo journalist when it does n’t go over your head .
