io9 chatted with Goldsberry during an Altered Carbon press junket about her character ’s journeying in season two . In aseries about identityand what it mean to be a somebody , Quellcrist has been an enigma because , for the longest prison term , we did n’t fuck who she was . In time of year one she was deliver as the mysterious First Envoy moderate a revolution , a vision in Takeshi Kovacs ’ ( Joel Kinnaman ) mind , a cause of death possess by something or someone the world does n’t understand — and then there ’s the veridical Quellcrist Falconer underneath it all , the tragical Italian sandwich hiding behind the mythical memory .

“ It was very easy for me to stand paired Joel Kinnaman or Will Yun Lee or Anthony Mackie and see the boy inside the gentleman , ” she replied . “ They ’re very unlike from each other , but they ’re all beautiful and available — and , most importantly , unassailable enough as male person leads that they are 100 percent comfortable in recognise a powerful cleaning lady … playing three versions of Quell , that ’s another story . Between seasons , Takeshi Kovacs spent 30 years search for Quellcrist after learning she might be alive , but the cleaning woman he finds at the start of time of year two is not the one from his dream . Restoring her memory comes at a price , because the Quellcrist he remembers is not the one she is now . This is a woman who ’s been beaten down with guilt and remorse over creating the very engineering that she is set to destroy . In the past she had the Envoys to give her purpose , but the insurrection has displace beyond her , and she does n’t know how to get it back without sacrifice the sufferer the Quellcrists faction has now turned her into . Plus , there ’s the whole narrative of how she come back to living in the first shoes , something that changed her into a individual Takeshi Kovacs has trouble reconciling with his memory of the love of his life story . Their making love is still there , and it is powerful , but it ’s definitely not the same .
