Yesterday , Google decided to remove theIranian government activity ’s official Covid-19 appfrom its Play Store . The app itself was bill as a tool to aid test and track persons infected with the new coronavirus — but it would appear that many venerate more villainous reason behind the app , highlight Iranians ’ distrust of their governance at a crucially sensitive time .
The story was initially reported byZDNet , which had malware researcherLukas Stefankoreview the app . Stefanko reportedly did n’t determine anything particularly fishy in the app ’s APK . Gizmodo attain out to Google to ask for an official reason why the app was pluck but did n’t invite an immediate response . Part of the suspicion circumvent AC19 , however , stem from Persian citizens ’ distrust of their regime . In special , the Covid-19 app request genuine - time localization data that was sent to a remote server . After coronavirus began to distribute in Iran , citizen were station a the great unwashed SMS root on them to download the app . It was alsorecently reportedthat the app had been developed by Smart Land Strategy , a firm that built two Telegram copycat apps called Gold Telegram and HotGram . These two apps were thenreportedlyremovedfrom the Google shimmer Store for allegedly gather up user data without consent for Persian intelligence agency .
It probably does n’t help that MJ Azari Jahromi , Iran ’s curate of info and communication theory technology , tweeted the government had the positioning data point of 4 million people who download the AC19 app .

While it ca n’t be definitively said that the AC19 app is intended for spying , ZDNet cited unnamed dissidents who fear subsequent update may result in the Persian government using this location data for fly-by-night purposes . Even if Google pull the app for shoddy claims , the move does not exactly reduce fears that the AC19 app may not be as harmless as it appears . Those fears underline public suspicion during a interior health crisis — a job that is n’t limited to Iran and something that does not bode well for containing a highly contagious computer virus on a global graduated table .
