Charities linked to Meghan andPrince Harryhave been surprised with a flood of online donations after a fundraising effort went viral over the weekend.
At the animal shelter Mayhew, which waslisted as one of Meghan’s main charities in January, they are “all absolutely flabbergasted,” says CEO Caroline Yates.
“It was such an incredible thing to come in and see on a Monday morning. We’re so, so grateful to everyone who has shared the original post and donated to Mayhew, and are trying to thank everyone as quickly as possible!”
The campaign has raised more than $5,380 through 223 donations so far.

A spokeswoman tells PEOPLE, “It’s been an extraordinary weekend; we spent all of it on social thanking people as individually as possible.”

She added that the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, which the Duchess of Sussex joined as Vice President on International Women’s Day, was providing “an incredible platform for the young women alumnae now leading the Campaign for Female Education and reaching the most excluded girls.”
“The Duchess’ call to action – to move beyond hashtags and donate to world-changing organisations – has come through loud and clear, and generated such a warm, positive and energetic movement.”
