Donald Gloveris opening up about how he used his relationship with wifeMichelle Whiteto help him with hisMr. & Mrs. Smithrole.
Speaking to PEOPLE at theNew York City premiereof the new Prime Video series, which is based on the 2005 movie of the same name, on Wednesday, Glover, 40, revealed he drew upon his own experiences with intimacy while playing the role of John Smith in the spy comedy.
“I think there’s a lot of little things where I took them from my own life,” the actor told PEOPLE. “I felt like what made this show sexy is intimacy so I wanted to do that.”

“There’s a lot of scenes that are kind of just taken from my life — you know my wife’s hair is like, it’s not kinky, it’s long and I was in the shower and I was like, ‘What the hell is this?,’ ” Glover explained to PEOPLE. “Because she likes to take it and put it on the shower walls. I was like I really did not know what was going on.”
“I was like, ‘Yeah I think we have rats or something.’ I said that to her as a joke but like I really didn’t know,” he laughed.
“When you’re living together you just kind of don’t realize these things are super normal to me but they’re not normal for you," Glover added. “I feel like there’s a ton of that in the show.”

Glover has been in a relationship with White, with whom he shares three sons, since at least 2016. The musician confirmed that he and White were married while on the red carpet for the premiere ofMr. & Mrs. Smith, while his costar Erskine later revealed that Glover and White tied the knot while he was making the series.
“We both got married to our partners, respectively,” Erskine told U.K. outletThe Independenton Thursday. “Donald got married during the show and I got married right after the show, so definitely it had an impact on us.”
Glover, also known as Childish Gambino in the music industry, then explained, “I love marriage because I never had rose-colored glasses about it. My dad was always like, ‘Oh, marriage is really hard work.’ It was never like, ‘Oh you’re supposed to be happy all the time.’ "
