Steampunk : A ethnical drained - end reflecting the aesthetics of a long - gone time , good manners of some SF and fantasy writers for whom a reformation of the past was more interesting than the futurity ? Or shining ( and well - multiply ) instance for the future of humanity ? Posters at the ( steampunk - haunt ) Whitechapel message board are convinced that it ’s the latter , and are unforced to make the case to convert you , as well .

The screw thread jump subtly :

I ’ve been thinking about what Steampunk has to offer the world besides being another quaint subculture , peculiarly in brightness level of the fact that it ’s about to step over the line of products of subculture and into voguish nonsense that will unavoidably bring with it stash of pipe choke off band waggoneers .

What I ’m really interested in is the prim enthusiastic amateur inventor / scientist part . The way I see it , most of the worlds problems – poverty , hunger climate change etc.- will never be efficaciously addressed by a top down , high tech research and payload of investment capital approach . Rather , I suppose that any progress that will have any existent effect will have to be of the sort that a self educated someone can make in their garage … I would wish to propose that were there to be some kind of a Steampunk ethnical ethic it should be in taking that amateur discoverer approach to modernistic technology with an centre to come up to the issue that humanity faces today .

Since when has the amateur inventor musical theme been something that ’s principally identify as steampunk ? yet , permit ’s continue with others ’ sentiment on the content :

Considering the Steampunk Cultural Ethic , I would like to treat my experience at SalonCon . SalonCon describes itself as The prim Era for the twenty-first century . While not exclusively a “ steampunk ” conventionality , it ’s establishment and attendance are certantly influence and involved with Steampunk . What stood out for me at this Convention was the manner of those in attendance . I have never been to a cleaner , better smell , better behaved convention … I retrieve there is a yearning for a place where there can be a structured formalness – a place where the cultural rules call for deference , way and a sensation of grace . Perhaps steampunk , in it ’s formal verbalism , supply the space to have that formality .

number from someone engulfed in the movement amply , I see it as a giant collaboration between polymath friend who have resolve to spurn pointless mass production and planned obsolescence … I just want quality , I ’ve already see what quantity is doing to society and the earth itself . I want to hold up a slow living , and I want to surround myself with people who prize the genteelness of the British ideal of the Victorian Era without the stifling social mores … many of the steampunks I ’ve met ( and I imagine I fall in this category ) are like well spawn mad scientists … all the stratum and all the overweening geekiness you could manage .

Steampunk Magazine is an awesome affair full of win and sex . To me , the Steampunk movement is really currently a masquerade for something deeper , the culture of the great unwashed who want to get to the roots of being and actually do it by rights , ‘ it ’ being … everything .

This is , I think , part of what you were getting at originally , Thom . This is the aspect of Steampunk that we really involve . The Magazine is a beneficial example of it . It has root in things like the Scouts too , even though tell the Scouts were full for anything is something one hat to admit . Being self - sufficient is part of it . Being less fucking stupid about things is a part of it . Doing thing in a better way .

And doing it with style . That ’s what we need to take away from Steampunk .. you’re able to do biography right , do it yourself , do n’t emaciate everything , but you do n’t have to be a grubby .. matter .

I reckon I fit in with that last quote as much as anything – What seems to be driving the believers is the approximation that people need to , you know , do shit and take responsibility for themselves , and that does n’t really seem like a steampunk idea as such as just , well , common sense . I think the idea of seek to pin the core idea of “ do n’t be so passive ” as a particularly steampunky construct is somewhat despairing , myself . But then again , I ’ve never invent any kind of mechanics , steam - powered or otherwise , so what do I know ?
