When Doctor Whoreturned to our screensthis retiring weekend in “ The Star Beast , ” it brought with it all sorts of uncanny and occasionally terrible threats , fromthe mischievous Meepto theinsectoid Wrarth Warriors . But perhaps nothing could institutionalize you scurrying behind the lounge than one single jocularity / threat : a fish curry made by Donna ’s mom .
When we reunite with Donna and her family in “ The Star Beast , ” the Nobles are having a moment of a rough meter . Having hand away the lottery earnings the Tenth Doctor had surreptitiously gifted her with just before his re-formation , Donna is skin to make ends receive with her husband and girl , having lost another line herself . One expanse she stay enriched though , whether she wants to be or not , is the help of her mother Sylvia , who has taken to groom meals for her girl ’s phratry to help lighten the load . While we hear legendary story of a rightfully mammoth sausage cast , only one of Sylvia ’s nutrient experiment has captured the hearts and minds , for better or worse , of Doctor Who fandom in the last week : her perfectly - comedically - timed explainer of what ’s on the carte before everything goes sidewise in Doctor Who ’s trademark style . A tunny Madras curry !
It ’s one of the peculiar moments in an already funny episode . Jacqueline King ’s deliveryof the simple line is pitch - perfect , and it ’s the sodding microcosm of writer / showrunnerRussell T. Davies ’s worldviewfor Doctor Who , the bizarre mundanity of human life clashing with the eccentric , foreign humankind of risk in Time and Space . But also : the idea of a tuna curry is just bizarrely gross to a set of people , hence why Doctor Who fans have become taken up . Remember , this is the fanbase that willingly try Fish Fingers and Custard after the Eleventh Doctor nosh on it in his unveiling episode . A canned tuna curry is practically fine dining in comparison . But while “ The Star Beast ” left Sylvia ’s tuna Madras behind in its alien havoc , have no veneration , culinarily curious Whovians : the BBC has providedan prescribed recipeso you could make it at home . Check it out below !
