Today mark the launch of Victory is Life , the latest expansion for Cryptic ’s free - to - play MMORPG Star Trek Online . theme around the locales and story of theDeep Space Nine goggle box series , the expansion follow up with intimate boldness from the dear television set in the decades after the end of the Dominion War — and the actor who played them , too . René Auberjonois , who played DS9 ’s chief of protection Constable Odo throughout the entireness of Deep Space Nine ’s TV run , is one of the late .
Auberjonois is joining 11 other member of the show ’s castto recapitulate their purpose in the new enlargement ’s storyline , which sees players head through the wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant to inquire a mysterious marauding fresh metal money called the Hurq , threatening to bring war to the quadrant once again . To celebrate the launch of triumph is liveliness , io9 spoke to Auberjonois about getting the chance to play Odo again , as well as the wallop Deep Space Nine has had on science fiction for the last two - and - a - half decades .
io9 : What ’s it been like return to Odo after all these years ?

René Auberjonois : Well , it ’s not quite as unusual as one might imagine it , because , you know , Deep Space Nine — and all of the Star Trek franchises — have hold out on . The put-on in our community is , “ when you get the Star Trek population , it ’s the gift that maintain on gift . ” In the last five week I did a convention in Washington and then in Dortmund , Germany . I do the convention altogether to conjure money forDoctors Without Borders … but not totally selflessly , I also get to see sometime friends . On top of that , there ’s a sense that it never really end , in a way of life . Without the episodes every week , as we did , when we were doing it in the first place . But it ’s not , like , out of view and out of judgement . honestly , it was n’t a bountiful hump to put on Odo ’s vocalism and lead off in … that was the shell . In that sense , I ’m sure if I ’d done a show that started twenty - five years ago as Deep Space Nine did , and I take back to it , if it were another sort of TV show it would probably be very strange . But I say , because we encounter our mould and colleagues and shape penis again and again over the eld …
What was it that you think made now the right time to step back into this role ?
Auberjonois : Their willingness to pay me to do it !

That ’s very intelligible !
Auberjonois : That is , in fact , the case . And you know , I have found that once Deep Space Nine was on Netflix , the interest in the show quite clearly rejuvenated . So , doing this offered the opportunity to keep communicate with people who only now observe the show or are rediscover it . So , it seemed like a cracking opportunity to aid reenergize and rejuvenate the great unwashed ’s interest in Nine . Now that Star Trek Online has allowed , for a number of years and has been helpful and really serve a enceinte office in being , in a sense , involved in that .
Odo as a fictitious character develop so much over the row of Deep Space Nine , as we see more about him and more about his multitude — and now it ’s been even long than that when we come to meet him in Star Trek Online . In what way do you recollect Odo has grown and changed as a person by the fourth dimension that we meet him in this raw expansion ?

Auberjonois : Well , I suppose for the fans who have followed Deep Space Nine , it will be great . I ’m indisputable they ’ll notice a giving difference in terms of the last prison term we saw Odo return to the Great Link to begin the healing that was necessary . The person as we knew him join — he was like , a Pinocchio character reference in the sense of the fact that he change , and not knowing who he was . And then there was his love for Kira — and all of that developed , but he was a pretty unformed character when we last determine him . Now , in terms of the biz , he has matured improbably . Has bring a variety of leaders purpose that in the original series evolve to the point that it has in the online plot .
So much of your performance as Odo was the voice , and your characterization you put into it and the make - up … but , there was a portion of physicality in your operation . How do you translate that kind of presence that Odo commanded physically when you ’re performing the character just with your voice and a mike ?
Auberjonois : Well , the nature of an online secret plan is such that you ’re delivering a lot of data that actually , for the players , that actually does n’t ask the same kind of emotional clarity that you ’d need to achieve when you ’re do on television camera . Many people were interested and impressed with the fact that even though Odo ’s face was immobilise , basically , by this kind of mask that he wore , that he was still able to express emotions so clearly . That animalism that you mentioned — a tilt of the head . Or a glare in the eyes . It was also in the interpreter . And since those were all I could look on — the forcible and the vocal . Since the voice was a major part of it , I do n’t guess it was a problem . At least , it was n’t for me as an doer . And it will forge .

You mentioned a few of your casting mates are returning along for the new expansion , so , how was it working in this universe with them again ? Did you get a fortune to record with them , or was your body of work mostly solo ?
Auberjonois : You roll in the hay , unluckily , I did n’t . This kind of work , you get used to mould solo . I ’ll say , as I said , just a couple weeks ago , I was in Germany with a lot of my fellow who had already done their work on the game , and with outstanding enthusiasm and excitement . Even though we were n’t all working together , I had a sense of the momentum . And I did n’t find it difficult .
Nana Visitor , who playact Kira , is also returning , and Odo had a very important relationship throughout the series . How do you think Odo feels about the potential of seeing Kira again , after all this time ?

Auberjonois : You bang , I do n’t want to give away any of the joy of discovering the game … it ’s very complex . And to encounter Kira — both of them have gone through a lot of change . Part of the biz is seeing how they encounter each other … the way it ’s been imagined , the complexness of how they encounter and how they work through them . So I do n’t want to give anything off .
As well as Victory coming out , 2018 is the anniversary of Deep Space Nine , and you still see the legacy of the show not just in Star Trek and thing like Star Trek : Discovery , but in scifi in ecumenical . What is it do you think it is about Deep Space Nine that has made it such an enduring influence on scientific discipline fiction all these years after ?
Auberjonois : Well , I think it ’s because of two major factors . One , because Deep Space Nine dwelt on a darker carpenter’s plane than the old , wonderful versions — the original and Next Generation , grand serial without which we could have never exist . Deep Space Nine had a darker , more psychoneurotic form of outlook in the characters . The characters had sorry slope to them . So that was part of it . But also the fact that it was really a precursor — I wo n’t say it was the only one — but I think it was a major precursor conceptually of a keep fib like this — being final and all over . There was a continuing arc to it , the seven years that I think has serve it well . People can stream it and each episode after instalment … that has influenced television in ecumenical , but principally also in science fabrication .

Star Trek Online ’s new enlargement , triumph is life history , is available to PC players for free from today . Xbox One and Playstation 4 versions of the game will incur the expansion at a late date .
