The Earth is surrounded , it ’s said , bycosmic flypaperareas of space that cancel gravity and trap unwilling object inside . Quite what those objects are have remained a mystery … but we ’re about to find out .

The cosmic flypaper is in reality known as “ Lagrangian point ” after mathematician Joseph - Louis Lagrange , who discovered it in 1772 , and there are five such points in Earth ’s orbit ( known by scientist as L1 , L2 , L3 , L4 and L5 ) . For billions of year , these enormous ( billion of kilometer wide in the compositor’s case of Ls 4 and 5 ) sphere of space that miss any soberness – due to Earth ’s gravitational pulling canceling out that of the Sun – have been trapping all manner of space debris inside , and now scientists are target to use two NASA dig into to find out just what lies in there , and what it can severalise us about the line of descent of our galaxy … and more specifically , of our moon :

Most uranologist conceive that the moon form from the debris generated when a Mars - sized object strike the Earth a glancing coke about 4 billion years ago . Their problem is in reason where the target came from .

information processing system fashion model show that incoming objects from elsewhere in the solar system would tend to expunge the Earth with too much muscularity . Instead of make the moonlight , they obliterate the Earth . So the impactor must have originated close by , the theory go , where it could not accelerate too much before run into .

Another cue is that the moon arrest the same abundance of oxygen isotopes as the Earth , hinting that whatever hit us must also have had the same isotope abundance . When stargazer look out into the solar system , to Mars for model , the isotope abundance are unlike . So this , too , hints that the impactor formed closely by . But where ?

What is puzzling is how an object could uprise so close to the Earth and reach the size of it of Mars before a collision charter home . Their common gravitational attraction should have pull them together long before . Unless , says [ Princeton University astrophysicist Richard ] Gott , it form at a Lagrangian point . “ An object could baby-sit at one of these stable points and just grow , ” he say .

Once it grew sufficiently large , gravitational fundamental interaction with other physical object , such as Venus , could nudge it out of the Lagrangian dot and onto a collision course with Earth .

NASA ’s probes – STEREO 1 and 2 – will set about journeying through L4 and L5 subsequently this year .
