While David Cronenberg ’s 1988 thriller Dead Ringers — starring Jeremy Irons as matching gynecologist as brilliant as they are unstable — stay a tense , potent viewing experience , Prime Video ’s upcoming series versionstarring Rachel Weiszis the rare revamp we ca n’t wait to see . Today ’s new laggard only makes us more intrigued .

“ Well , I was a huge fan of the original Cronenberg film . From the first moment I saw it , I could never forget it . I ’ve been obsess with that film for most of my life , ” Weisz revealed at the press group discussion . Birch , however , said she had n’t see Dead Ringers before learning about the Prime Video labor , but that she “ sit down and watched it , and then watched it again immediately after . It was sinful . ”
Switching the main character from male to female — while keeping them gynecologists with an uncomfortably close matching relationship — obviously set the serial asunder from a stock remaking . “ It felt like it would just be really interesting to tell this story with two women at the sum of it , ” Birch said . “ But I do n’t know that Rachel and I ever had conversation where we said , ‘ Okay , well , now that they ’re women , how does that alter it ? ’ It , of course , transfer everything , but it also changes nothing . That ’s what I think , we wanted it to be as fun and as uncivilised as the film and permit the serial publication go in its own focus . And then setting it against a medical background that especially focused on tocology and gynecology — that feel really right-hand for the storytelling . ”
Part of how Dead Ringers attain that tone , Birch suppose , was through a writer ’s elbow room staffed entirely by adult female . “ We had an all - female writer room , which , honestly , we approached the best writers and the writers who I think we felt would really connect with the material and just be challenged but a bit unrestrained by this kind of account . And it meant that while I consider everyone get their own personal experiences to a author way , this was also hugely inventive as well . People were sort of researching and meter reading and watching and , you be intimate , contributing and feeding off each other as well as bringing their own kind of personal experiences . ”
Weisz say that play Drs . Beverly and Elliot Mantle — who share a lot of the same scenes — was “ without a uncertainty the biggest challenge of my acting life . No inquiry about that . ” But the Oscar winner also call in it “ the most joyous , in many ways . [ play dual part ] was hard work . But was n’t just me . It was the effects , motion control , hair , make - up , the set dresser , airplane propeller . I mean , everybody was shifting from one eccentric to the next — I did n’t fritter away Beverly for one day and then Elliot for another 24-hour interval . It was within one scene . So we would shoot one one-half and then take the other half . We were move as a living unit on the set . It was thrilling . I imply , exciting as perhaps learn to take the air a tightrope , which I definitely ca n’t do . But we all learned together . ”
Weisz said she ’s looking onwards to the audience ’s receipt of the series . “ It ’s a jolly wild ride at prison term . There ’s a batch of devilry . It ’s quite deliciously mischievous at metre . Emotional . Moving . And there is some humor , also . Some darkly , in darkness humorous [ moments ] . ”
Along with Weisz as the Mantle Twin , Dead Ringers ’ roll includes Britne Oldford ( The Umbrella Academy , American Horror Story : Asylum ) as Genevieve — a character who seems to be inspired by ( and also refer for ) Geneviéve Bujold ’s character from the original film , as well as Poppy Liu ( Hacks , iCarly ) , Michael Chernus ( Severance , Orange is the New Black ) , Jennifer Ehle ( Zero Dark Thirty , Saint Maud ) , and Emily Meade ( The Deuce , The Leftovers ) . The first two episode are directed by Sean Durkin ( Martha Marcy May Marlene , The Nest , The Iron Claw ) ; he also co - guide the finis . Other directors include Karyn Kusama ( Jennifer ’s Body , Girlfight ) , Karena Evans ( P - Valley , Snowfall ) , and Lauren Wolkstein ( A Friend of the Family , Y : The Last Man ) .
