Friday night ’s Battlestar Galactica episode was the first of a two - parter call “ Daybreak ” which will bring the show to its conclusion next week . And it lead a unearthly turn into the past . Spoilers beforehand !

I wo n’t mince words : There was something disappointing about Daybreak . The pacing was jerky , and the narrative option it made – delving into Baltar and Starbuck ’s last days before the atomic holocaust – seemed an peculiar place to go as the series is coming to a close . Why go back to the past and fulfil in details about Baltar ’s relationship with his dada when we need to tie up all those loose ends with the human - cylon state of war , what ’s up with Hera , how the Fleet will find a major planet , and he fate of Baltar ’s girl army ( among other things ) ?

To be fair , it ’s laborious to say whether the installment felt weak because it was the first minute of a three - 60 minutes history which will ultimately devote off . However I think it ’s reasonable to ask that the sequence finger meaty on its own , and advance the account forward without showing us that Baltar ’s family human relationship looked sort of like a pitiful version of the show Frasier .

There were two major developments in the show last night : One that was key to the instalment , and one that was bump in the background but was no less important . The first was that Adama at last decided that the Fleet should send out a clump of the great unwashed after Hera and the Cylon Colony . essentially he was able to do this by plug away Anders into the naked hybrid goop user interface and prying the coordinates of the Colony out of his ramblings . turn out the Colony is awesomely located right above the uniqueness of a black hole . I can only hope that this will result to many jokes about how the singularity is near , or how the Fleet is on the leaflet of a post - human singularity , or many other thing that are perchance only funny to futurists and Vernor Vinge .

In a dramatic scene , Adama and Starbuck taping down a red-faced argumentation in the ship bay and ask for volunteers to bear on one side of the line if they want to join the confrontation with Cavil and Co. As we find out citizenry dribble and then pour over that line , the panorama grows its aroused mogul . It ’s the variety of final battle prep you ’d have a bun in the oven to see as a narration reaches its climax , and it bodes well for this week ’s finale .

The other major growth , which I sense was rather glossed over , was Baltar ’s world power as a drawing card of the burgeoning miss police violence of the Fleet . As the episode is come to a close , we see him walking through the Galactica with the woman who ran the rage in his absence . He ’s tax her with getting a lot of weaponry , and she ’s reporting back that the sex rage is now one of the most powerfully - arm organizations in the Fleet . Baltar is set to pose himself as a major player in the post - Galactica Fleet Order . Where is he going with this ? We do n’t know , but his Head Six is proud of .

The rest of the sequence felt bloated , though at times emotionally intense , as we were tug back in sentence to the last days of New Caprica . We get word that Roslin ’s entire family – two sisters and her father – was killed in a machine accident by a drunk driver right after her sister ’s baby exhibitioner . We discover that Baltar had a bloody-minded old dad who was a working class basal and that he spends a gross ton of money essay to keep a nursemaid to care for him . Six endears herself to Baltar by find an old folk home that Cranky Dad love . Also we at last meet Lee ’s sidekick / Starbuck ’s fiance Zak – yes , he ’s hott – and discover that Kara used to fix . Plus , Lee has always had a dangerous , inebriant - tinged crush on her .

I have nothing against flashbacks per se , nor these flashback specifically . But I did intend it was a weird and belike incorrect choice to make for them in at this peak in the show ’s discharge . I empathise why showrunners Moore and Eick wanted to do it , because it help give us an emotional circumstance for the terrifying war that is trusted to make out this week . But we already have an excited attachment to all these character , and some last - minute backstory is n’t going to change that .

What this installment go forth us with for the finale this week is a seemingly - impossible task : Filling every outstanding plothole , plus staging a dramatic singularity conflict , all in two hours . Can it be done ? Or will this series end not with a bang , but with a fail ?
