On report , the indie motion picture After . Life sounds terrific . Liam Neeson plays an funeral director who may be half-baked , or may be a supernatural brute who serve the restless stagnant like Christina Ricci assume their fates . Unfortunately it find rote . spoiler !
One reason we were worked up about this movie , other than the hope of Neeson and Ricci bathymetry the depth of undead weirdness , was that ads teased it as urban phantasy . And indeed , for the first third of the film you ’ll think you ’ve stumbled into a smart , supernatural story of a woman , Anna , who dies basically because she ’s being a thoroughgoing squawk . Anna gets into an accident because she ’s freaked out from screaming at her fellow in a eating house for no rationality other than gamy strung neediness . When her body arrives at the funeral home , we fill Eliot ( Neeson ) , the long - suffer cat who sees dead people . And who has to conduct with all her annoying undead snark as she tardily realizes how awful her catty life has been .
I like the mind of dead people being annoying . And I was fain to sympathise with the funeral undertaker who is just patently losing longanimity with the ghosts of all these whiney , privileged hoi polloi who just ca n’t think they ’ve die out .

Unfortunately , the pic veers in the most predicable , proverb - like direction possible just as the characters are starting to scraunch with originality . Turns out ( ho hum ) that Eliot really is just a serial killer . And his main goal is cutting off more and more of Anna ’s article of clothing as he shoots her up with drugs that paralyze her and slow her affection beat . That ’s veracious : He ’s making her imagine she ’s dead so he can get his jolly boat . It ’s cliched necro twisting porn , which sadly ca n’t be made playfulness to watch even when great performing and Ricci ’s goth girl nudity are involve .
There are the needful scenes of ogle dead bodies and unhinged mumbling and sleeveless effort on the part of Anna ’s fellow to rescue her . Nothing about the story feel mysterious or creepy-crawly . It ’s just getting from elevator car fortuity at tip A to “ blah blah fate bad than death ” at point B.
Because we figure out right away that Eliot is just a Hannibal wanna - be , there is no suspense . And because we really agree with Anna when she says , “ I ’m beaming I ’m dead , ” it ’s backbreaking to venerate for her . In the terminal , you ’ll wish you just went to see Clash of the Titans to watch Neeson gammon it up , or that you trolled the internet for hot picture of Ricci , instead of buying tickets to this limp horror flick .
