This past Friday , the kids from 1980s Hawkins , Indiana , were back with Stranger Things 2 , the 2d season of Netflix ’s breakout show from the Duffer Brothers . It arrived with huge anticipation and massive excitement so , like many of you , we binged the whole thing on its first weekend . Overall , Stranger Things 2 was a delight , and a desirable addition to the pop civilization phenomenon — but it also definitely had a few issues , too
We Loved…
The Exciting Conclusion
The last two episodes of Stranger Things 2 were harebrained . From the moment the Demidogs start creeping into the lab ’s basement through the hypnotic last shot , the whole floor was a blast . There was the massive escape from the laboratory . At the same time , there was the fight at the junkyard . Eleven comes back . Will has an dispossession . Bob dies . Dustin has that cracking moment with Dart in the tunnel . Eleven basically becomes Jean Grey fighting the Mind Flayer . There ’s the super awkward , perfect Snow Ball saltation , all extend into that time of year three tease . The last two episodes of Stranger Things 2 are everything we wanted and more .
Now , you could easy argue stuffing all that into two episodes was too much , especially when some of the earliest other episodes are dull by comparison . We do n’t needfully disagree . But the way the account is structure , everything has to chance rapidly . Once the Demidogs come out of the dry land , there ’s a ticking clock . Unstoppable killers have commence to invade . The group has to use Will ’s head to regain out the answers and stop them as before long as potential before those weenie get out and something bad follows .
With the group split up for most of this , the multiple parallel storylines add to it feeling a moment overstuffed . But it ’s all of import . Without Joyce , Mike , Nancy and Jonathan forcing the Mind Flayer out of Will , without Dustin , Steve , Lucas and Max trouble the Demidogs , Eleven and Hopper would n’t have been able to shut the gate and acquire the twenty-four hour period . Everything is go down up to provide a substantial conclusion for all the main character .

Then things get better with the final dance . A rare preindication of normality in Hawkins , the dance allowed our season two love hoot Lucas and Max , as well as Mike and Eleven , to finally osculate . Plus there ’s that perfectly , uncomfortable role for Dustin , with his new hair’s-breadth and confidence . It ’s all just rattling and a smashing juxtaposition to the saturation beforehand . Say what you require about the time of year as a whole , but Stranger Things 2 ended well .
Will’s Journey
If you ’re actor Noah Schnapp , who plays Will Byers , season one had to be a piffling bit of a disappointment . It was all about finding Will , yes , but he was n’t really there that much . Stranger thing 2 gives him the best of both world . He ’s not just a crucial part of the account , he ’s a major character , and Schnapp pink it out of the park , with a captivate functioning throughout .
When the show begin , Will is still having episodes but examine to return to some kind of normality . Unfortunately he ’s soon possessed by the Mind Flayer . Will goes from a sort picayune son to inhuman - hearted demon . And , sometimes , they ’re both there at the same sentence , each version simultaneously entrance on Will ’s face . He wants to be squeamish , he wants to be helpful , but he ca n’t . So he innocently sets up a bunch of soldiers , pretends to know who Mike and Joyce are , but really just desire to watch the world die .
Some of the just scene of the intact season rotate around Will : The view with him and Bob in the elevator car let the cat out of the bag about face fears . The scene in the shed where Joyce , Mike and Jonathan say him their tender memories and , of course , the intense dispossession picture , which must have pushed the player to the threshold . All the kids on Stranger Things are corking but in time of year two it was Schnapp as Will who is the real stand - out .

The (Mostly) Toned Down Pop Culture References
One of the biggest complaints about Stranger Things is that it ’s just nostalgia porn , anon - hold back onslaught of ‘ fourscore winks and nods that serve no purpose . And at the kickoff of season two , they ’re there again , specially in the Halloween episode with references to Ghostbusters , Halloween , and so much more . ( Though the moment where Lucas contend that he does n’t want to be Winston is one of the unspoiled consequence of the season . )
However , as the season fall apart on , obvious references like Ghostbusters take a backseat . rather we ’re left with Eleven meeting her mama as a kind of Rosemary ’s Baby court . Jonathan and Nancy ’s late night Temple of Doom scene . Bob go into the cellar of the lab , just like Ripley at the end of Aliens . Eleven and her Chicago crew looking like The warrior . These references are much more rewarding because they are n’t in your fount . If you get them , great . If not , it ’s completely fine , and really , they ’re pretty sparse . In fact , as the season goes on , the time geological period has almost nothing to do with what ’s go on besides the limits of the technology used in the story . It ’s almost as if the Duffers needed those nostalgia crutches to get back into the lilt of thing but , once the report locked in , they forgot about it and just told a great story .
There Was Indeed Justice for Barb
When the Duffer Brothers started coming up with an mind for season two they probably had no idea that the character of Barb ( Shannon Purser ) from time of year one would be such a devotee favourite . So , as a result , that made the hunt for her slayer a small , but essential , subplot . Enter Murray Bauman ( Brett Gelman ) , a freelance journalist hire by Barb ’s parents to image out who killed her . Murray is a hardcore conspiracy theoriser but , in Stranger Things , those possibility are but a sliver of the truth . He ’s also Justice for Barb personified .
Now , to be fair , Murray is mostly an afterthought in the time of year ; he ’s kind of a muse for Jonathan and Nancy to eventually express their notion for each other . And the mode he prove that Barb was kill is a little rushed and overshadow by the other insanity happening in the show ’s last instalment . But the fact it ’s given this much screentime at all just shows that Stranger Things 2 aimed to please its rooter .
Bob
Stranger Things 2 introduce a good amount of new characters this time of year but our favourite had to be Bob , play by Sean Astin . Bob is a loveable Hawkins aborigine who works at Radio Shack and is out - of - his - mind excited to be dating Will ’s mom , Joyce Byers . At first , the character is so overly overnice and accommodating you begin to think that he ’s a bad guy , aperson hired by the lab to keep an eye on Joyce and Will . But , thankfully , that smell never arrive to realization .
Actually Bob is just as nice , if not dainty , than we think he ’s going to be . He brings game for Will . He loves Mr. Mom , he helps everyone solve the enigma of the tunnels and at long last he becomes Bob Newby , superhero , when he turns on the twinkle at the lab and lets everyone escape .
The downside to all of this is Bob is the only major time of year two character to die . But that append a nice range of emotion to the show ’s last few episodes and it seems like it may keep the Byers in Hawkins for at least another season . Bob will be overlook , but not leave .

Steve’s Emergence
In time of year one of Stranger Things , Steve Harrington ( Joe Keery ) is kind of a cock . Yes , he becomes more of a hero as the time of year goes on but you do n’t feel especially connected to him . Well , in Stranger Things 2 , that changes big clock time First , you realize he sincerely loves Nancy ; she may not have a go at it him back , but he ’s sincere and ripe about his feelings . And once Nancy croak off , Steve becomes the defacto leader for Dustin , Lucas and Max , which is when he gets really secure .
Steve ’s actions throughout the second one-half of the time of year go forward to transform him into a hero . He leads the way against the demidogs at the junkyard , he leads the expedition into the tunnel and he offers great hair attention advice to Dustin , who employ it in one of the best return of the whole time of year . We ’re not exactly indisputable how Steve will fit in move onward , especially since it seems like he ’s going to college shortly , but if this is his post - off , it was a bang-up one .
The Development of Dustin and Lucas
When you have Will own by a demon and his good Quaker Mike facilitate out , it ’s kind of easy for Lucas and Dustin to get overlooked . But in Stranger Things 2 , they each play an expand , worthwhile role . First is Lucas , who is falling for the new character Max and thereby add in more people to help them shoot down the townsfolk ’s evil . We finally get to encounter his parents too , as well as his baby , who is so good she better dally a big character in the coming season .
Meanwhile , Dustin is also come down for Max , and find a new pet named Dart , a little puppet that turns out to be a sister Demogorgon . Now , granted , that whole storyline find a minuscule strained and him lying to his friends about Dart is n’t exactly in character . But it gives Dustin some much needed responsibility and drive throughout the season .
So take those two characters , put them together , and it just works . They ’re competition but also acquaintance . They ’re on the sidelines , but make themselves essential . They should be feuding , but they cultivate it out . They take two persona that could have been nothing and make them into something the interview loves to watch .

The Mind Flayer
The Demigorgon was an awing foe for the kidskin in the first season , but season two had to make things bigger . And make them bigger they did by stick in the Mind Flayer , an almighty being that could have very well been the true antagonist from the very beginning .
A bad guy of this height immediately scud the stake through the roof . This is a being that ’s unadulterated evil and it ’s tardily strike over everything . It ’s creating mysterious tunnel . It ’s spreading grampus Demidogs . It ’s based in the Upside Down but has the ability to reach beyond it through possession . And at the end of season two , we do n’t even know if it can be shoot down . We just know it has n’t been .
The time of year does n’t end with the Mind Flayer fall back ; it merely gets pushed away and shut out of world when Eleven closes the gate to the Upside Down . But there it is , still lurking in the last slam of the season . This is a major , major problem that will not just be solved in a individual season . And that gives us hope for more exciting taradiddle .

Just More Mature Storylines in General
And no , we do n’t mean what happened between Billy and Mike ’s mammy . We think the characters acting more adult and the piece of writing being more considerate . For example , there are strong reason why Hopper ’s choice to insulate Eleven was both right and improper . We side with both Steve and Nancy in their complicated human relationship . Dustin and Lucas avoid a love triangle with Max by being mature about it . Bob does n’t shun Joyce when he realizes the truth about her family , instead he sweep up it . And Mike is never harebrained at Will for what he becomes ; he ’s a steadfast Quaker , at his side the total time .
The list goes on an on . essentially everyone has grown up substantially in season two . That means they feel more human , the emotion are more realistic and situations more complex and compelling . Take the wide-eyed fact the enemy this fourth dimension is n’t just a single entity but a larger construct . That ’s a pretty respectable metaphor for how Stranger thing 2 has develop from the first season .
We Didn’t Love…
Most of Eleven’s Story
Mere days after the show ’s liberation , this is already the biggest sticking point and for beneficial reason . On one side , we finger like by separating Eleven from the group , you turn a loss some of the chemical science that made Stranger Things so expectant . On the other handwriting , there ’s no doubt that storywise it make sense for her to be separate . Her relationship with Hopper is peachy . We get to learn her backstory . We see she was n’t the only baby at the lab , and she become a more convinced , powerful eccentric . Those thing are all truthful and very unassailable arguments for Eleven ’s story in Stranger Things 2 .
And yet it ’s just not as entertaining as last yr . Seeing a untested lady friend traveling to Chicago on her own to fundamentally be overwork by a bunch of new character service a use , to be sure . But it feels too unfamiliar for the show . Not in a terrible elbow room , but just in a slightly disappointing way . maintain her by from the master fiber also slowed down the main write up considerably . guess if Hopper had just talked to her about it ; things could have be solve sooner , leaving more time for a more involved story . As it stands now , as wonderful as her retort in episode eight is , and how sound off ass her part in the last is , she ’s kind of this time of year ’s deus ex machina , inserted right when she needed to to save the day , instead of being an participating role player throughout .
Again , it ’s not that what she was doing did n’t add to the tale throughout , it just did n’t experience as “ Stranger Things ” as you ’d hope .

The Season’s Pacing
Stranger Things 2 does n’t really begin in full until Hopper finds the tunnels at the end of installment four . At that moment , the show finally has a very specific goal : envision out what created these burrow , what their determination is , and how to stop it . Until then , though , the show spend the better part of four episodes waiting for something to happen . Some of that is essential to start a season . We need to see what the characters have been doing since time of year one , enter new characters , set some things up . But in those first four instalment , there are basically only a handful of events that ram the overall story of the lineament vs. the Mind Flayer forward . There ’s the introduction of Dart . Will gets possessed and draws the tunnels . Then there are one or two more matter , and then that ’s it .
That ’s not to say everything else is n’t entertaining and worth seeing . The time of year ’s start is fun . But other than “ Defeat that big shadow monster ” you have no idea what the private road of the season is until we see Hopper in those burrow . And then , things shoot off like a roquette ship , all the means toward that wonderful finale . We just wish thing were a minuscule more balanced throughout .
The Role of the Lab
Stranger Things 2 set off with a wholly young story — a group of characters we ’ve never seen before , on the run from the law . Then it ’s revealed one of them was from the Hawkins research laboratory . She ’s capable number 008 , just like Eleven was … well , 011 .
And then that fib does n’t come back to that for seven episodes . And when it does , we do n’t learn much more about it other than what we already knew , which is Dr. Brenner held tests on little kids . Brenner is largely absence from the season , save for a few visions , and is supercede by Dr. Owens ( Paul Reiser ) . Owens is the new drawing card of the science laboratory and while he ’s secretive , it never feels like he bonk what the hell is going on . In fact , there are full setting where he and a bunch of doctors sit around and specifically say they do n’t cognise what the hell is going on .
So that means the huge cristal - element in this show , the research laboratory , the stead where it all get ( and finally ends ) is n’t really a major thespian . We still do n’t know on the button what they go for to achieve with any of their experiment . No one at the lab feel like an adversary . It ’s just become a physical outer space for thing to bechance . Plus , its mystery story have now officially died with it doubly , once when Brenner allow for after time of year one and again in season two when it ’s blame for the death of Barb .

Max and Billy
Max and Billy ( Sadie Sink and Dacre Montgomery ) are two other new fiber in Stranger Things 2 . The stone’s throw - siblings are new in Hawkins and they ’re both introduce for very specific purposes : Max is there to add some much requisite girl ability to their group and to give Dustin and Lucas something to spill the beans about . Billy is the only human sorry guy cable , even though he ’s essentially only bad to Lucas and Steve .
Of the two , Max is obviously better . sump create a strong character who is very much self-governing and a worthy foil , it ’s just that the season does n’t give her much to do . She ’s the new girl Lucas and Dustin like , but she does n’t really believe what ’s move on until half way through the season . Max is coolheaded , but she ’s a moment of a letdown .
Billy , however , just kind of stinks . He essentially serves no purpose on the show except to make things heavy for Max and some secondary characters , sometimes . This is Stranger Things , for call out loud . If you ’re a reference on Stranger Things that does n’t get to encounter any stranger things , did you really Stranger Things ? I do n’t consider so .
